Houston’s stretch of I-45 has been named the most dangerous stretch of roadway in the United States by an article in Popular Mechanics that ranked the 25 most dangerous roads in America. The article explains that there does not appear to be any features specific to this highway to blame for its dangerous status, but the statistics do not lie.
In recent years, Houston has been classified as having one of the most dangerous highways in the nation, but also one of the deadliest stretches of road in the entire world. The section of I-45 that goes through Houston has 56.5 fatal accidents for every 100 miles of roadway. Officials blame people for simply not obeying traffic laws. They speculate that texting while driving, driving drunk, and driving at excessive speeds are the main culprits for the high number of deaths.
The magazine also has two other highways in Texas on the list. US-83 that runs through Starr county is number 5 and has an average of one fatality every other week. The other stretch of highway is US Route 175 that runs from Dallas to Jacksonville, Texas with 0.7 deaths per mile. Almost half of those happen in the Dallas area.
Be safe and sensible on the road. It is important to obey all traffic laws: stick to the speed limit, stay off of your phone, do not drive under the influence, and make sure to be a defensive driver. Many people are involved in car crashes through no fault of their own, so it is important to drive defensively. If someone near you is driving irresponsibly, try to move away from them if it is safe to do so and give them plenty of space. If you or a loved one has been in a car wreck or was a victim of an irresponsible driver, you may need representation.
